For Immediate Release
Wednesday June 27, 2007
Tuesday June 26, 2007 thousands of Internet radio stations across America turned silent in symbolic protest of the increase in royalty rates proposed by the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB). The proposal includes increases retroactive to January 2006. Internet radio broadcasters citing that these increases would decimate the Internet radio industry and put most Internet radio businesses off the air, turned off their streaming on Tuesday in an effort to move listeners to contact their congressmen to support a counter proposed bill that offers more acceptable rates.
Bridge Ratings conducted two studies in association with Tuesday's "Day of Silence" to gauge what impact this movement would have.
The national sample of 3000 persons 13+ was first asked if they normally listen to Internet radio in a typical week. 21% of the respondents said they did.

This 21% is consistent with previous Bridge Ratings studies and, in fact, is slightly higher than the 19% who said "yes" in a study earlier this year.
During the day on Tuesday, the designated "Day of Silence", we asked those that responded "yes", the following question:
"Did you listen to Internet Radio or radio streamed on the Internet today?"

On Tuesday's "Day of Silence", 45% of the respondents said they listened to Internet radio; 55% said they hadn't.
We can conclude from this data that Tuesday's "Day of Silence" did have a significant impact on listening though 45% of the sample still found Internet radio stations to listen to.
We then asked the entire sample of Internet radio listeners if they found their primary Internet radio station silent on Tuesday's "Day of Silence". 62% of the respondents indicated they had.
Another way of determining the impact on the public of Tuesday's "Day of Silence".
Finally, we asked the 62% who found their primary Internet station silent on Tuesday, what action they took when they found that station silent.
72% stated that they tuned to an Internet radio station that was streaming while 23% didn't listen to Internet radio that day.
Coming Thursday: Did the Internet Radio audience return on the day after "The Day of Silence"?
*Sample = 3000 consumers 13+
Methodology: Random digit dial telephone interviews, one person per household.
Sample error = +/- 1.5%
